GY-3 Fruit Hardness Tester (Penetrometer)

The GY-3 belongs to the GY series of fruit hardness testers (GY-1, GY-2 and GY-3). It measures the hardness of fruits such as apple, pear, watermelon and banana in order to judge their maturity, and serves fruit research departments, fruit companies, fruit farms and agricultural colleges and universities in breeding improved varieties, harvest storage, transport and processing. Hardness is the force of the dynamometer divided by the area of the pressure head (P = N / S) and is read directly in kg/cm² (×10⁵ Pa).

The GY-3 is the model of the series that works with two pressure head sizes: a Φ8 mm head covering 1–24 kg/cm² and a Φ11 mm head covering 0.5–12 kg/cm², which makes it suitable for both hard and soft fruit. Accuracy is ±0.1 and the head is pressed 10 mm into the fruit.

Before measuring, 1 cm² of peel is cut away with a small knife. The head is then pressed slowly and vertically into the flesh to a depth of 10 mm, the driven pointer shows the hardness, and the average of three measurements is taken. After measuring, the zero knob returns the pointer to the initial scale line (0.5 on the GY-3). The tester is calibrated at the factory.
