The TFA Dostmann 31.1136 measures surface temperature without contact over a range of -50 to +500 °C (-58 to +932 °F). Hold the measuring button and the display shows SCAN with the live reading; release it and the last value is held (HOLD) on the backlit LCD for a few seconds.

A class 2 laser marks the centre of the measuring spot, and the 12:1 distance-to-spot ratio gives a 10 cm spot at 120 cm distance, so the closer you aim, the more precise the reading. Emissivity is fixed at 0.95: the instrument is not intended for shiny or polished metal surfaces, cannot measure through glass or plastic and is not designed for body temperature.

Accuracy is ±1.5 °C or ±1.5 % (whichever is greater) from 0 to +500 °C and ±3 °C from -50 to 0 °C, with 0.1 °C resolution and a response time below 1 second. The thermometer runs on 2 × 1.5 V AAA batteries and switches off automatically after approx. 8 seconds.
